MAGNIFICAT and NUNC DIMITTIS in B flat. For Bass solo, SATB and organ.

These Evensong Canticles were commissioned n 2011 in memory of the artist Cornelius McCarthy by his partner of forty-nine years. Peter Dobson's beautifully illustrated biography of McCarthy, 'Radical Affinities' is available from galerie@mooi-man.nl & 0031(0)626 330 655) or from Alec Ayres (01945 772590).

The cheerful Magnificat reflects the artist's outwardly convivial, practical side, whereas the quietly sensitive Nunc Dimittis where, as Simeon, the soloist recalls Isaiah's prophesies (“I, the Lord, have called thee . . .” sung by the backing choir ).
The setting aims to convey the deeply introspective and humble nature of a man who shied away from the self-promotion of his own highly talented work.
